Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekter wins competition for Tingbjerg Multi-Purpose Arena

The multi-purpose hall is designed as a single volume with a unifying roof that leaves as much space as possible for nature around the building. It will become a new architectural landmark for Tingbjerg and a gathering place for all of Copenhagen.

The arena will be built in Tingbjerg Sports Park near Utterslev Mose. The ambition is for the arena to become a new landmark in Tingbjerg, offering a wide range of opportunities for associations, athletes, and visitors from both Tingbjerg and the rest of the city.

At the heart of the project is the large main arena, which will serve as the multipurpose arena’s central gathering space. The main arena will have room for around 2,000 spectators for events such as sports and cultural programs.

Tingbjerg Multipurpose Arena will become an integrated part of the sports park itself, which the City of Copenhagen will upgrade with inspiration from our winning proposal. In front of the arena, a plaza will open toward the sports park. Several different activity and seating zones, as well as paths with space for play areas, cultural events, and other activities, will be developed.

The specific functions to be established in the outdoor areas will be clarified over the coming months in collaboration with local stakeholders and residents.

The arena has a total budget of approximately DKK 500 million. The A.P. Moller Foundation is contributing DKK 400 million, while the City of Copenhagen will finance the remainder. The City of Copenhagen will also be responsible for establishing parking and outdoor areas around the arena.

In connection with the announcement of the donation, Ane Maersk Mc-Kinney Uggla, chair of the A.P. Moller Foundation, said: “It is the Foundation’s wish that the future multi-purpose arena will benefit local sports and cultural life in Tingbjerg, and that it will also create new, attractive settings for activity and community that will attract people from across Copenhagen. In doing so, it will help create development in the area that will benefit the entire capital.”

Christopher Rohl, Mayor for Culture and Leisure and Citizens’ Services (RV), said: “The multi-purpose arena will be a landmark for our time and for the development of our capital. It combines new architecture with the historic area, expands sports capacity, and brings the community together in a way that creates the perfect setting for a vibrant city. I look forward to seeing local children rolling balls across the arena floor on weekdays, and to tournaments bringing the city together in the stands on weekends.”

Line Barfod, Mayor for Technical and Environmental Affairs (EL), said: “The new multi-purpose arena should contribute something to the Tingbjerg area while also benefiting the entire city. That is why it is important that the areas around the arena are attractive, open, and provide space for play, culture, and social gatherings for all residents.”

Malene Hjortsø Kyndesen, architect and partner at Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekter, said: “The multi-purpose arena’s large, calm roof settles gently into the landscape like the stroke of a wing, creating an inviting presence. Beneath the roof, the many activities are visible and form a gathering place for the area, where people, life, and movement will flow into the building and out into the landscape spaces. A building creates a sense of place when it connects us to its site and history. And it becomes meaningful when its architectural motifs inspire new works of architecture.”

The project will now be further developed before Tingbjerg Multi-Purpose Arena is expected to open in 2030.

The main event arena spans both the ground floor and first floor, with an impressive 13-meter clear height. Located at the south gable, it is visible as soon as you turn onto the site. Spectators can access the stands from both the floor and the balcony. From the fixed seating at the end of the exhibition hall, there are views over the bog.

Going forward, work will focus on creating a variety of activity and recreation zones, as well as pathways with space for, for example, play areas, cultural events, and other activities.

The large scale of Tingbjerg Sports Park and the urban plan is given an equally strong counterpart.

The overall impression is of a building set within a scenic landscape of movement, connected to both Utterslev Mose and the Tingbjerg district.

Tingbjerg Multi-Purpose Arena will become an integrated part of Tingbjerg Sports Park . We have therefore created an inviting forecourt that opens toward the sports park. The forecourt can also be used for flea market days and other local events.
