Scene Change in Stockholm: The Royal Swedish Opera to Be Restored, Renovated, and Transformed

The listed opera house is facing a careful transformation where history meets the future. A new stage primarily for children and young people, new entrances, additional rehearsal rooms, gastronomy, and outdoor dining facing the city will bring new life both on and off the stage.

The opera building is part of Sweden’s shared cultural heritage and a place where performing arts, gastronomy, and urban life have brought people together for generations. In close collaboration with the client Statens Fastighetsverk and architecture firm  Ahrbom & Partner in Stockholm, we have worked on the initial programming and design phases, and the local plan for the project is now ready to be submitted for consultation.

The proposal shows how the building can be developed with new functions while retaining its unique character. It is based on the opera building’s historical and architectural values. The extension provides space for a new stage and new rehearsal rooms. New entrances and potential outdoor dining areas strengthen the connection between the opera building, Kungsträdgården, and urban life.

“It is finally time for a scene change. With respect for the cultural heritage and a new layer for our time, we are creating an opera house that will remain relevant for at least the next hundred years. With great care, the extension blends naturally into both the building and the surrounding urban environment. The renovated national stage will open itself to the city, the present, and a new audience.”
