Daylight Talk: Sense of Place – Perception of Light

During CAFx – Copenhagen Architecture Biennale 2025, Trine Hedeager Harboe and Malene Hjortsø Kyndesen from Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects will explore the relationship between place and light in three of the studio’s projects: the Natural History Museum of Denmark, the New Viking Ship Museum, and Kannikegården Parish Hall in Ribe.

Though the four projects differ widely, they share a common thread: the interplay between the site’s unique character and the presence of light.

Each Place, Its Own Conditions
The talk demonstrates how daylight can shape and amplify an architectural narrative:

Across all projects, light is far more than function. It is a sensory and atmospheric element that shapes our experience of space, orientation and materiality—both indoors and outdoors.

At Kannikegården in Ribe, daylight mediates the encounter between a historic ruin and new architecture.

The roof surface of the Natural History Museum is punctured by oval skylights and light cuts, creating direct visual and spatial links between the terrain and the underground exhibition rooms. The controlled light openings have a dual perceptual function — hinting from above at a hidden world underground, while from below serving as precisely calibrated daylight inlets that distribute light into circulation zones.

The undulating geometry of the ceiling echoes the curved language of the exhibition areas and acts as an active agent in shaping the daylight.
