Signalhuset (The Signal House) is a new landmark building and a key piece in the ambition to densify Stockholm’s historic Tidningskvarter (The Newspaper District). At the same time, parks and green spaces are being opened up, creating new recreational connections. The building houses offices along with an active ground floor featuring public-facing functions, a café, and a restaurant.

The existing local plan originally included a 19-story tower on the site. In 2024, we won a parallel commission with a proposal that reduced the building’s height by more than half. Signalhuset now offers 14,000 m² across 9 stories, with public functions on the ground floor and staggered rooftop terraces oriented toward all four directions. Our proposal also made room for significant urban openings and new recreational connections between plazas and park spaces.

Signalhuset sits at the transition between a quiet residential area in Marieberg and the former production district The Newspaper District. Within The Newspaper District, the two iconic buildings for Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet define Stockholm’s skyline. Together, they create a unique cultural-historical environment from a time when media houses stood side by side with printing presses on the lower floors.

New opportunities for everyday life
The building’s form adapts to the very different scales and urban spaces of its context. This is achieved through varied heights, projections, and setbacks. Angled façades create openness and, with it, new connections for everyday life in the neighborhood. At the same time, we carefully designed step-downs and rounded corners to ensure the best possible conditions for sunlight and shelter. In this way, the building creates ideal settings for city life and outdoor stays around all sides of the house, from morning to evening.

A tall timber building
Signalhuset, at 9 stories, is planned as a timber construction. We look forward to developing structural solutions in wood that support the organic architectural language while also addressing the complex construction logistics required when densifying within an existing city.

The property company Areim is developing the entire district in close collaboration with the City of Stockholm. The goal is to create more attractive workplaces and, through densification, make the area more diverse and vibrant.

Signalhuset is located at the transition between different building and functional types. Its closest neighbors are the iconic high-rises of Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. To the west lies a denser and more finely grained residential development
