Parallel commission to reimagine the Fregatten Jylland experience
Together with LYTT Architecture, Lundgaard & Tranberg has been selected as one of three architectural teams invited to propose a new vision for Fregatten Jylland in Ebeltoft. The parallel commission will explore how the museum experience can be renewed and enhanced, drawing on the site's maritime heritage. The commission has been made possible by a donation from the A.P. Moller Foundation.
Today, Fregatten Jylland comprises the historic wooden warship, museum and shipyard buildings, a harbour area, a restaurant and extensive outdoor spaces overlooking Ebeltoft Bay. The ambition is to create a new and engaging visitor experience, where architecture, interpretation and technology can strengthen the museum's relevance and bring the ship's history to life for new generations.
We see great potential in building on the site's existing qualities and exploring how architecture can create stronger connections between the frigate, the buildings and the surrounding landscape. The commission also offers an opportunity to explore new ways of communicating the ship's cultural heritage and relating its historical significance to contemporary questions of technology, power and Denmark's role in the world.
“We are grateful that such highly regarded architects have accepted the challenge of fundamentally renewing Fregatten Jylland as a museum, placing the ship once again in a contemporary and relevant context,” says Anne-Marie Dohm, Director of Fregatten Jylland.
The parallel commission includes new construction, interior redesign and an integrated interpretive visitor route. The work will continue until the end of 2026 and will form the basis for further project development and funding.
The other participating architectural teams are NORRØN and CEBRA.
