Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects win Bjergsted Waterfront in Stavanger, Norway

Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects win the Parallel Design Contract for Bjergsted Waterfront. The project aims to create a closer connection between the city center and Bjergsted Waterfront while offering the city a new public square, a new pier as well as two new hotel and office buildings.

Originally the buildings in the seaport city of Stavanger had front row waterfront access. Since, the city has undergone a development resulting in a greater distance between the city and life in the harbor. We have developed the proposal for the new Bjergsted Waterfront inspired by the historic conditions.

The starting point was the wish to create a proposal that enhances the site-specific atmosphere, reconnecting the houses and city-life with the waterfront while contributing a new, attractive aspect to the site. That is why the row of houses are opened-up to create a public square that connects the cultural destination of the Bjergsted Park with the pier and the waterfront. This creates optimal conditions for public life to unfold with a square that offers sunlight at all hours of the day.

Apart from the new square and an upgrade of the pier, the project includes three buildings: A reconstruction of an existing historic warehouse and the design of two new buildings; a hotel and an office building both framing the square. The hotel holds 250 rooms as well as large conference facilities a restaurant as well as other amenities. The office building will be programmed in collaboration with the client. The ambition is to create a flexible building for many different users.

The overall aim of the project is to create a strong mental connection between Bjergsted Waterfront and Stavanger city center. This interaction will create value for the city as well as the client.

The competition was held in a collaboration between Base Property/Strawberry Properties and the Port of Stavanger with assistance from National Association of Norwegian Architects (NAL) as well as input from the Municipality of Stavanger.
